5 Tips for Summer Sun Protection

Posted by Samantha Simma on Jun 29th 2023

The "dog days of summer" are upon us—an expression coined to refer to the hottest stretch of summer when the Earth's tilt affords a more direct angle of the Sun's rays on the Northern Hemisphere. So how does an outdoor enthusiast beat the heat while still experiencing all the outdoors has to offer? Find out, with these five tips for optimum sun protection:

1. Use Sunscreen

The sun's harmful UV rays can damage our skin, leading to sunburn, premature aging, and an increased risk of skin cancer. Taking proactive measures to protect our skin not only reduces the risk of sunburn but also promotes long-term skin health. Before going outside, protect your skin with sunscreen with high SPF, and don’t forget to reapply as you spend time outside. If you’re going to be spending time on or near bodies of water, look for sunscreen that doesn’t have chemicals that are harmful to aquatic life. For example, sunscreens labeled “reef-safe” typically use mineral-based UV blocking ingredients like zinc oxide and titanium dioxide, which are safe (while still being effective) for skin and the environment.

2. Hydrate

Consistently and persistently hydrate before, during, and after enjoying outdoor activities. As you sweat, it’s important to replenish the fluids you’re losing to avoid fatigue, muscle cramps, dizziness, and even heat-related illnesses. Adequate hydration not only helps regulate body temperature but also supports optimal physical and cognitive function. Carrying a reusable water bottle can help you get in the habit of staying hydrated, but hydrating snacks like watermelon are also helpful! If you can help it, avoid sugary or caffeinated beverages, which will offer little hydration.

3. Strategize Your Sun Exposure

Plan your outdoor activities around cooler parts of the day—early mornings and late afternoons tend to have lower temperatures and less intense sunlight compared to the peak midday hours. Consider packing a hand-held fan for midday adventures or do your best to seek out shade during that time. Avoiding prolonged and continuous exposure to the sun’s harmful UV rays can reduce health risks. Finally, if possible, recreate near water in which you can cool off in.

4. Head-to-Toe Protection

Sun protection starts from the top—don a hat and sunglasses to shield your face, neck, scalp, and eyes from the sun. There’s nothing worse than a sunburn on your scalp, and hats with a wide brim (like our Reversible Bucket Hat) provide a greater radius of shade. Meanwhile, sunglasses are vital to protecting your eyes from harmful ultraviolet rays. Prolonged exposure to these rays can lead to various eye issues such as cataracts, macular degeneration, and even temporary vision loss. Skip the cheap sunglasses and opt for those with lenses that offer more advanced sun protection.

5. Outerwear Options

hoosing the right clothing is essential for effective sun protection during the summer months. Look for lightweight, loose-fitting clothing made from tightly woven fabrics that provide maximum coverage. Seek out clothing with a UPF (Ultraviolet Protection Factor) rating, which indicates the amount of UV radiation absorbed or blocked by the fabric. Most items in the DSG Outerwear fishing product line have a UPF 50+ protection rating, which is highly effective in protecting you and your skin from sun damage. Some fan favorites—among anglers and outdoors women in general—include the Chloe Hooded Sun Shirt, Charli Sun Shirt, and High Waisted Boat Leggings. Shop the entire product line to make sure you stay cool, comfortable, and protected in the outdoors all summer long.
