Why DSG Outerwear Makes the Best Women's Ice Suit

With the rise in competition for the female angling market, we now see gear designed specifically to enhance comfort and efficiency on the ice.

When it comes to selecting the ideal women's ice fishing suit, my experience spans decades of winter adventures. From snowmobiling to ice spearing, and eventually evolving into a passion for ice angling, I've braved temperatures up to -40, many times. Through these experiences, I’ve gained an understanding of what it takes to enjoy being outdoors in the extreme cold and STILL being able to function and have fun.

Over the years, I've grown discerning about gear, particularly women’s gear. I've tested everything from lifestyle brands to snowmobile suits, and every ice suit on the market. This has taught me the importance of function in sub-zero apparel. You can’t “create” heat if you can’t move. That’s why it’s important to understand the balance of maintaining the heat you have while being able to stay mobile to help create your own - in the most extreme conditions. This can make all of the difference when ice fishing.

WHY FINDING THE RIGHT WOMEN’S ICE SUIT WAS CRITICAL FOR ME

I live and breathe fishing. It’s not only a hobby for me, but a critical part of my business and how I make an income. I can’t “not show up” because it’s too cold.

Through the many years of ice fishing, I’ve struggled with finding a suit that is warm, lightweight, and fitted. I always resorted to snowmobile gear instead. Although it would lack D Rings, large pockets, and padded knees, it would be a lot easier for me to move, fish, and enjoy my time outside than wearing a traditional male suit from one of the few ice brands offering ice specific apparel.

Of course, it’s no surprise that a women-owned snowmobile apparel company was finally the team to engineer the women’s ice fishing line right. Since introduced to the original DSG Avid Suit, I haven’t looked back.

WHY DSG MAKES THE BEST WOMEN’S ICE SUIT

The DSG Arctic Appeal 3.0 isn't just about fashion (though we appreciate a stylish look); it's fundamentally about function. With the rise in competition for the female angling market, we now see gear designed specifically to enhance comfort and efficiency on the ice. There are 2 areas where I have found DSG to ESPECIALLY stand apart from the rest:

1. The True Female Fit

The “feminine fit” has a lot more to do with practicality than it does looks (although that’s a bonus).  YES, looking and feeling like a woman in your ice suit is nice – especially when posing for those Instagram photos, BUT the practicality of the female fit is essential in being “hardcore” and enjoying the experience, even in the toughest conditions.

Having the perfect fit helps eliminate bulk. It looks better, feels better. However, having apparel that fits simply keeps you warmer. It keeps you from wind drafting through your back and sides, eliminating unnecessary heat loss – all of which help you stay warmer on the ice. The most important part of an ice suit? Staying warm.

This women's ice fishing suit is tailored specifically for the female form, eliminating the bulk often found in unisex or men's versions. It provides an accurate fit in critical areas such as the crotch, armpits, and shoulders, where other brands typically fall short. My primary concern with previous women’s fishing suits was the poor fit in these areas, which hindered mobility and comfort while working on the ice.

2.  The Drop Seat Design

If you're a female angler and you don't understand the benefit of a drop seat, you're missing out. Drop seats have been a feature in snowmobile apparel for as long as I can remember, but DSG has now introduced this into their ice fishing line, and it's a game-changer for women.

The drop seat allows you to use the restroom without having to remove all your layers. This makes bathroom breaks much more convenient, but more importantly, it helps you retain heat. The worst thing you can do when trying to stay warm on a chilly day is to take off the very clothes that are keeping you warm. For the record – and for all the women who always ask me this question – no, the drop seat does not compromise the warmth or functionality of the gear when it's properly designed and used. You also will not pee on the flap, I promise.

The drop seat is the only way I pee when I’m out of the shack and on the ice.

On top of those 2 main features, here are additional features that make the Arctic Appeal 3.0 the  perfect women’s ice fishing suit to invest in.

  • Advanced Insulation: Utilizes FLOTEX layered foam combined with 180 grams of insulation in the body for warmth without bulk, ensuring you stay warm while maintaining mobility. This is crucial, as you generate heat through movement.
  • Float Technology: FLOTEX provides flotation for up to two hours in emergencies, making safety a priority without compromising on warmth or style.
  • Waterproof and Windproof: The durable polyester shell comes with a 2,000 MVT/2,000 g/m waterproof breathable coating and DWR treatment, ensuring you stay dry and protected against the elements.
  • Pockets and Accessibility: Features multiple handwarmer pockets, cargo pockets with entries for storage, and D-rings for attaching gear. Plus, there's a detachable microfiber towel for those messy moments.
  • Knee Pads and Snow Skirt: Comes with removable knee pads for comfort when kneeling and an interior boot gaiter to keep out snow during those long treks across the ice. I often remove knee pads on snowy years when I need to be running through deep snow or on a machine frequently.
  • Ventilation: Fast-drain mesh at the hem ensures any moisture escapes, preventing sweat build-up.
  • Reflective Visibility: Enhanced with reflective piping for safety during low-light conditions, a feature often overlooked but crucial for night fishing or early morning treks.
