Stay Sharp with Your Bow This Summer

Whether you're prepping for your next hunt or just keeping your skills sharp, a solid summer practice routine can make all the difference when fall rolls around.

Just because it’s summer doesn’t mean bow season is out of sight, out of mind. In fact, the off-season is the perfect time to stay sharp, refine your form, and get in a little extra time with your bow. Whether you're prepping for your next hunt or just keeping your skills sharp, a solid summer practice routine can make all the difference when fall rolls around.

Here are our top tips for creating an at-home archery setup and dressing smart for those crisp early morning sessions.

Backyard Practice Setup Ideas

1. Create a Safe and Clear Shooting Lane

Designate a space that’s free of distractions and hazards. Choose a spot with a natural backstop (like a berm or fence) or place a large target block with a safety net or plywood behind it to catch stray arrows. Always make sure your shooting lane is clear.

2. Use Portable Targets and Mark Distances

Invest in a high-density foam target or a 3D animal target to simulate real-life conditions. Use landscaping flags, painted rocks, or yard markers to measure distances—5, 10, 20, 30 yards—to give yourself consistent aiming points.

3. Practice Like You Hunt

Shoot from different stances, including kneeling or elevated positions (like from a deck or a tree stand ladder if you have one). Practicing in the same positions you’ll use in the field helps build muscle memory and confidence.

4. Add a Little Pressure

Time yourself, or shoot with a friend to simulate a bit of adrenaline. Add simple challenges—like hitting a paper plate from 30 yards—to keep things fun and goal-oriented.

5. Keep It Consistent

Even 15–20 minutes of shooting a few times a week can help maintain your form and accuracy. If you can, pair your backyard sessions with strength and mobility training for better draw weight control and core stability.

Early Morning Layering Tips

Summer mornings can be surprisingly chilly, especially if you’re heading outside before the sun’s fully up. Layering properly ensures you stay comfortable while still having full range of motion for shooting.

Start with a Lightweight Base Layer
Try the Lightweight Long Sleeve. Moisture-wicking and breathable, this shirt keep you dry and warm without overheating as the sun rises.

Add a Mid Layer
The Gianna 2.0 Pullover is a great mid-layer for early morning dew or light breezes. It’s quiet enough for shooting and light enough to remove quickly when things warm up.

Choose Flexible Bottoms
The Kortni Upland Pant is a great warm-weather option—durable enough for kneeling or crawling in the grass, but breathable and comfortable for everyday wear. Or try the Foraging Legging for a sportier feel that still performs outdoors.

Don’t Forget Accessories
A headband or cap helps keep your hair out of your face while adding just a bit of warmth. Lightweight gloves can also help if your fingers get stiff in the morning chill.

This summer, stay sharp, stay safe, and keep shooting. With the right gear and a little dedication, you’ll step into hunting season more prepared than ever.
